Central Director, Head of Research & Regulation Division (Chief Economist) Italian Banking Association (Abi)
Francesco Masala joined ABI in 1998.
He is the Chief Economist, Director of Research & Regulation Division, at the Italian Banking Association (Abi)
since November 2022.
In this role, he is responsible for the economic and financial analysis, the examination of banking prudential regulation and the assessment of banking risks, internal controls and sustainability issues, in close liaison with experts in the various departments of the Abi.

He represents the view of the Abi on these subjects, also acting as a member of several working groups, both at domestic and international level, such as the “Banking Supervision Committee” at the European Banking Federation and the “Prudential Supervision Working Group” at the International Banking Federation.
He is also in charge of relationships with relevant institutions (regulatory authorities and industry associations) and the financial community (research and economics institutes, banking analysts) He holds courses and lectures on banking and finance at some Italian universities (including LUISS, La Sapienza, Roma 3) and is author of publications and articles on banking and finance – published both in Italy
and abroad (including The Journal of Banking and Finance and The European Journal of Finance) -.
He holds a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Business and Economics and a Master’s degree in Economics & Management of Insurance Companies.
