ADOPTING ENHANCED DATA REFINERIES TO ADDRESS NEXT GENERATION CYBER THREATS

James

James Todd, GM Global Cyber Security Practice, BT Security

In the past 3-4 years we have witnessed a broad acknowledgement within the security industry that to handle the volume, velocity and variety of structured and un-structured event data we need to adopt a big data approach to the ingest, processing and visualisation of security events. However the historical methods of acquiring, storing and post processing atomic events and related context rich data sources, does not scale and does not keep pace with Today’s SOC operating models that are orientated around rapid intelligence exchange and the near real-time detection and remediation of sophisticated threats. Big data processing and analytics has moved on from batch oriented queries and associated workflow based enrichment to a modular data refinery model that empowers the end user to create their own views on pre-enriched data sets available in near real time and relative to their function within wider business ecosystems. Security analytics must follow suit and embrace advances in stream processing, in memory acceleration of on-the-fly look-ups and enhanced machine leaning assisted visualisation. However an event repository (Hadoop being our preference) is still a key component of the resulting architecture forming the hub of the reference architecture where structured and un-structured data is landed for future recovery and analysis.

In the presentation we will present the BT Security reference architecture for a modular data refinery, using a number of loosely coupled capabilities that create future ready Security Analytics platform.
